I believe the cormorant is down by Groombridge Place. It would be amazing if you could get a photo of the red kite over the Tanyard and share it on the project!
We have had reports of the Red Kite over Groombridge for over a year now – often near Cherry Tree Farm or low over the Tanyard. After near extinction in the UK (just a few pairs left in Wales) the RSPB and the Nature Conservancy Council began re-introducing Red Kites in 1989. The first birds were brought from Spain and later from Sweden and Germany. The latest project, Northern Kites near Gateshead , began in 2004. There are now thought to be four or five hundred UK breeding pairs at the moment and they are getting to be quite common in some parts of the country.
Moving on to Cormorants it might seem strange why this coastal resident was included in our list of common sightings – the UK cormorant population increases substantially through the winter and from October to February they can often be seen on various ponds and lakes in and around Groombridge and are frequently seen flying overhead. The redwings and fieldfares were also frequent visitors last winter – I counted over 50 redwings one morning on Groombridge cricket pitch with a few Fieldfares in the nearby trees.
