Spotted Flycatcher

This summer visitor is increasingly rare these days – its red listed ( UK Birds of Conservation Concern) but I was delighted to see one in Groombridge last week. It is one of the last migrants arriving in May or June and may well stay until October.

Spotted flycatchers often fly from a branch or a high perch at the top of a tree, dash out to grab flying insects and return to the same spot – a characteristic aerial display which will help you identify them. Their brown/grey colouring is very subtle and you may not easily pick out the spots.
