A walk on the wild (flower) side

Groombridge is in flower – our verges, hedgerows, woodlands and fields are full of colour and beauty. Have you been out for a walk to see our wild glories?

In a short, circular walk from the Crown Inn, we saw 18 different wild flowers, taking photos as we went so we can share them with you. None is rare, but they’re beautiful and important, and show that this is a wonderful place for wild plants to thrive – and we need to protect it. Burrswood drive is looking amazing at the moment, with fritillaries, primroses, cuckooflowers and wood anemones, and lots more if you look carefully.

18 wildflowers for you to spot in Groombridge

Each flower is named in the caption below its photo. Can you find them too? Even better, can you see some wildflowers that we missed?

Yellow Archangel
Ground Ivy
White Deadnettle
Procumbent Yellow Sorrel
Dog’s Mercury
Lesser Celandine
Common Dandelion
Dog Violet

Greater Stitchwort
Cuckooflower

The walk: Start from the Crown and head up Bird-in-Hand Street. After the last house, turn left across the first field (broken stile) to walk above Burrswood estate. On the far side of the field go over the drive (some steep steps here) into the small wood. At the stile on the far side go down the edge of the sheep field (dogs on leads!) to Burrswood ‘s drive, and back to the Crown along the drive.
