Hello spring!

We’ve been hibernating but spring is here and the wildflowers around Groombridge are blooming. There are banks of yellow Primroses, verges gleaming gold with Lesser Celandine, the Wood Anemones are bursting out their white flowers – and we’ve seen Cuckoo Flowers, Gorse, Dandelions, Lungwort and lots more.

Most spring flowers are yellow or white, and that’s because they stand out clearly for the flies that are the earliest insects to pollinate them. They’re easy for us to see too, so why not pull on your boots and see how many different flowers you can find?

Even though many of these plants are common, we’d like you to take photos on your phone and upload them to iNaturalist. That way we can tell how well the wild plants are doing in Groombridge and if any are under threat. (Check out our guide to using iNaturalist on this site if you’re new to it.)

The charity Plantlife has some good spotter sheets that you can print out and take with you. Right now, at the very start of April, we suggest you take both their March and April sheets – you should be able to find most of the plants on them if you look carefully. Good luck!
