A five-minute butterfly survey in Groombridge

This morning we had gorgeous sunshine after heavy rain – perfect weather for spotting butterflies in the garden as they come out to feed. We saw all of these in just five minutes! None is unusual but aren’t they gorgeous?

It’s really easy to spot butterflies and there’s another week to go of the Big Butterfly Count – a national survey that everyone can take part in. Just download a spotters’s sheet or the app, and spend fifteen minutes looking out for as many butterflies as you can.

Top tip – there are lots of Meadow Browns and Gatekeepers in the village and they’re not always easy to tell apart. Look out for the little circles on their wings – the Gatekeeper’s circle has two little dots in it, but the Meadow Brown’s only has one.

The butterflies in our garden are loving the wild flower patch we’ve been encouraging – it’s not very big but it’s buzzing with bees, fluttering with butterflies, and gives us huge pleasure too.
